Media Notes | The Honorable Leonard Walter Kruse, retired Superior Court Judge of Kitsap County, Washington died on June 18, 2009 at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton, Washington. Highly esteemed in his professional life and dearly beloved in his personal life, among Leonard's legacies is his vast imprint on the lives of all who knew him and were the recipients of his intelligence, diligence, and overwhelmingly, generous and loving heart. Born in Rochester, Minnesota, to Carlton Walter and Maybelle Pearl (Boyd) Kruse, on 2 September 1934. He grew up in Rochester, graduating from Rochester High School in 1952. Then he attended Carleton College at Northfield, Minnesota and transferred to the University of Washington Law School in 1955, graduating and admitted to the Bar in 1958. Leonard was recently honored for 50 years as a member of the Washington State Bar Association. Leonard served as Assistant Washington State Attorney General in 1959 and 1960. Then on 23 April 1960 he married Ragnhild D. Lundh in Seattle, Washington. This union eventually ended in divorce. From the fall of 1960 through 1961, he was a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Kitsap County. On January 1, 1962 , he joined the law firm of Greenwood & Shiers in Port Orchard, Washington and became a partner in 1963. He remained with that firm until 1977 when he left to serve as the lawyer for one client in the construction industry for four years. Then on 23 July 1965 he married Betty Jane (Tesar) Montgomery in Union, Washington. Then on 13 April 1981 they divorced in Kitsap County, Washington. Nineteen days after the end of his second marriage, on 2 May, 1981, he married Brenda Joy (Dobbs) Lundell in Bremerton, Washington. Leonard was appointed to the Superior Court Bench in Kitsap County in January, 1982 and served for 19 years, retiring in January, 2001. Among his many and varied interests and affiliations, he served as Trustee on the Board of the Kitsap Regional Library, Director on the Board of Kitsap Bank and was honored as Port Orchard Man of the Year in 2005. Len's commitment, devotion and involvement in his community was all inclusive, being a member of numerous and varied boards, committees, and activities. He served with dedication, energy, and sincerity. Since Leonard's retirement in 2001, his hours dedicated as volunteer at South Colby Elementary, in Port Orchard, were his most rewarding. His devotion to the kids, teachers, and staff , and in return, their appreciation of him, brought him great joy. He is survived by his beloved wife Brenda, son Jay (Lisa), daughter Pam (Bill), daughter Deb (Richard), daughter Jan (Jaron), 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins, and his favorite sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law. |
