Obit Margaret Egeberg Margaret Egeberg, an accomplished sculptor and widow of President Richard Nixon's chief health official, died of pneumonia at home in Menlo Park on March 31. She was 95. A native of Canada, Margaret McEchron Chahoon was born on Aug. 25, 1904, in Grand Mere, Quebec, where her American father owned a paper mill on the St. Maurice River. There she learned to ski and skate, fish with trout flies and paddle a birchbark canoe so quietly that the moose, beavers and loons were undisturbed. After home schooling, she went to Westover, a girls college preparatory school in Connecticut, and later Pratt Institute in New York to become a dietitian. She met Roger Olaf Egeberg at a Cornell house party and married the medical student in 1929. During World War II, Margaret Egeberg cared for their four children in Cleveland for four years while her husband served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Upon his return, they moved to Los Angeles, where he served as chief of medicine at the Veterans Hospital for eight years and later as dean of medicine at University of Southern California. Margaret Egeberg started her artistic career working in ceramics, making bowls and plates that were sold at Gumps. She also became president of the League of Women Voters and worked for Planned Parenthood while in Southern California. In 1969, her husband was appointed the assistant secretary for health and scientific affairs at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington, D.C. After moving there, she began sculpting and created pieces for the National Institute for Aging and the Mount Vernon Community Mental Health Center, among others on display. The couple traveled widely on diplomatic trips and spent summers at their ranch in Southern California. After her husband's death in 1997, she returned to California. In her West Menlo home, she enjoyed visiting with family and friends, often in the sunny garden adorned with her sculptures. She is survived by her children, Joan Hancock of Palo Alto, Sara McEre of Santa Barbara, Olaf Egeberg of Menlo Park and San Luis Obispo, and Karen Egeberg of Princeton, N.J., as well as eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A private memorial service was held at her daughter's home in Palo Alto, with cremation arrangements handled by the Neptune Society. https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Margaret-Egeberg-2763244.php |
