| Media Notes | ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, June 9 (AP)—Fire raced through a nightclub in this West African capital early today, killing 41 people trapped when flames destroyed an electrical system operating an automatic exit, the French Consulate reported. Most of the dead were Europeans, tne consulate said, although some bodies were so badly charred that identification could not be made quickly. A fire‐brigade commander said that it was possible that there were more bodies under the wreckage of the Pacha Club, a downtown nightspot popular with European tourists. Most of the victims apparently died from asphyxiation, authorities said. The blaze broke out at about 1:15 A.M. and fire engines were on the scene 15 minutes later, but it took eight hours for firefighters to bring it under control. The flames and thick black smoke created panic among the patrons. Some were trampled as they rushed for the only open exit, a narrow door, authorities said. Four survivors were hospitalized in serious condition. A consulate spokesman said that most of the European victims were thought to be French nationals. About 30,000 to 40,000 French citizens live in the capital of this former French colony. The cause of the blaze was not immediately determined. The club was in a shopping center in the heart of Abidjan owned by Ismaeli Moslem businessmen. It was not known whether any of the sect's funds, which are supervised by the Aga Khan, were invested in the project. |
